BREAST CANCER

An impressive campaign to prevent breast cancer was launched today by the National Women's Service (Sernam). "It can happen to all of us, get your mammogram now!" is the name of the initiative that aims to raise awareness among women to get a mammogram in order to detect the disease early.

Faces: Delfina Guzmán, Carolina Schmidt, Consuelo Saavedra, Mariana Loyola, Angélica Castro.

"In the campaign, familiar and credible faces were used to deliver the message to the target audience," explained Sernam Minister Carolina Schmidt, who also participated by posing for the posters.

Other public figures involved included actresses Delfina Guzmán, Mariana Loyola, and Angélica Castro, as well as journalist Consuelo Saavedra. All of them appeared bald in the images, symbolizing one of the well-known side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments that women undergo for cancer.

Schmidt noted that "the government, through the Ministry of Health and the National Women's Service, is implementing several measures." For example, she stated on Sernam's website, "The number of mammograms performed by the public health system will be doubled. Between 2006 and 2009, an average of 110,000 mammograms were conducted annually. In 2012, our goal is to perform 250,000 mammograms in the public network, and by 2013, we aim to exceed 300,000."

She also mentioned that "the network of digital mammography machines in the public sector will be strengthened, with at least nine machines being added in areas where incidence and mortality rates are high. This will enable faster diagnosis through breast pathology centers."

Additionally, "specialized breast pathology centers will be expanded. The Barros Luco Hospital and the Higueras Hospital in Talcahuano will be joined by the National Cancer Institute in Santiago as a third mammography imaging center."

Lastly, Schmidt emphasized that "in a public-private partnership, 20,000 mobile mammograms will be conducted in the last quarter of 2012, targeting high-demand and hard-to-reach areas. On the campaign website, www.haztelamamografiaya.cl, you can find information on the routes of the mobile mammogram units and how to register."
